From Dancer to Weight Gain

I was a dancer and I could eat anything i want, anytime, anyhow.

Maybe you don’t know me yet — I’m Christine, co-founder of CORALS. Back then, I was a dancer since age 7. I danced almost every day, even did cheerleading. I was always between 42–45kg, no matter what I ate. I could eat anything and still stay slim — haha, the perks of dancing!

But life changed. I fractured my left ankle, had to stop dancing, and after my law degree I got super busy running my F&B business. On top of that, I had hormone issues and PCOS, even went through a miscarriage. Slowly, my weight crept up… and one day I looked at the scale: 70.9 kg. With my short height of 150cm, imagine that — short and round like a ball haha.

When I looked in the mirror and at my phone photos, I felt ugly, heavy, tired. Clothes didn’t fit, I lost confidence, and I just didn’t like myself. Of course, I’m not saying people who are overweight are ugly — everyone has their own beauty. But for me, I just didn’t like myself that way.

Deciding to Change

One day I asked my husband, “Eh, wanna try lose weight together or not?” He said, “Let’s go!” and boom — the journey started.

We didn’t take supplements, shakes, or join any fancy program. I told myself, if I can’t lose weight with my own menus, how to convince clients our meals are healthy, right? So I created my own healthy menu and tested it on myself.

At first, I only aimed to lose 10kg. In the end, I lost 15kg — surprise!

Eating Real Food, Not “Diet” Food

My rule was simple: eat proper food. Protein, carbs, fiber, vitamins — all included. I didn’t punish myself with tasteless “diet food” with no salt or sugar. I cooked however I liked, used seasoning, and made sure it tasted good.

Because honestly, if I can’t eat it every day, confirm I will give up one. Haha.

Hitting the Plateau (and Buffets 😅)

By the 2nd month, I lost 10kg already. Then… stuck. Plateau. Wah, so demotivating.

So I gave myself “cheat days” — go buffet! Hahaha. Honestly, I love buffets, it made me happy, and strangely it helped me reset and continue.

But what really kept me going was my daily weight journal. Every single day, I recorded my weight and wrote a short note. When the numbers dropped, I got excited. When they went up, I reminded myself it’s normal. Because real talk — when you’re losing weight, it doesn’t just keep going down. Sometimes up, sometimes down.

As I’ve shared before, in the beginning stage of my journal (yes, I even made a PDF haha), I was testing out different food combinations, timings, and portions — just to get a “pace” for myself. After a while, I kinda figured out the concept that worked, and then I just ate whatever combination suited me and my hubby.

What I Learned About the Body

I also learned a lot along the way. Like, if you start moving or training, fat can turn into muscle. Muscle is heavier, so the scale might not move, but your body shape changes. Protein helps burn fat while keeping muscle. And daily stuff like sleep, stress, even hormones — all affect your weight.

So don’t panic if you see the number go up a bit. Look at the overall trend. That’s the real progress.

Light Exercise That Helped

It wasn’t just about the treadmill. Watching my face slim down little by little gave me a sense of progress and accomplishment that kept me going.

To break my plateau, I added some light exercise. I walked on the treadmill 30 minutes a day. Sometimes I ran for 1 min then walked for 5 mins (cannot push too hard because of my old ankle fracture).

Other days, I danced with Zumba — 30 mins, sometimes 45 if I got stamina. Haha. Nothing extreme. Just movement.

One and a Half Years Later

Some professionals said, “Aiyo, you lost too fast, later bounce back.” But now already one and a half years, I’m still maintaining at 55–57kg. Some days I eat more, some days less. Balanced la.

Technically my “ideal weight” should be 50kg. But honestly, I’m 35 now — 55kg feels good for me. Too slim also not nice la, I don’t think I’ll look good if I’m too skinny. More important is: I feel confident, energetic, and comfortable in my skin.

Why I Needed to Do This

And another thing — I also did this for CORALS. If I, the founder, can’t prove that our meals are really healthy and balanced, how to convince clients? I needed to walk the talk. And I did it. I didn’t feel presentable telling clients, “our food is healthy,” when I couldn’t prove it myself. That’s why I wanted to do this.

Final Lessons

Yeah ! I did it! Mission accomplished !!
Yeah ! I did it! Mission accomplished !!

Here’s what I really learned:

  • No need supplements or fad diets.

  • Balanced meals with protein, carbs, fiber, vitamins work.

  • Taste is important — if food isn’t nice, no one can tahan long term.

  • Light exercise is enough — consistency matters more than intensity.

  • Fluctuations are normal — don’t panic, just look at the trend.

  • At the end of the day, anyone can lose weight. It’s just whether you want it or not.

I hope my story inspires you. Not just about losing weight, but about finding a lifestyle where you feel happy, confident, and strong — in your own way.
